MDA 5K Fun Run - EastChase - 11 Nov, 08:00 AM

Three Decades. Two Partners. One Great Cause.
The Inaugural ERA Weeks & Browning Realty, Inc. MDA 5K Fun Run

Here at ERA Weeks & Browning we like to give back to the community that has supported us for so long. That is why we have been one of the largest supporters of the MDA for 30 years. Each year we attend many MDA fundraisers and show our support for a great cause.

This year we want to take our support up a level so we are hosting the first ever ERA MDA 5K Fun Run. This is a great opportunity for those who love to run or those who just want to come out and support a great cause and get together to make an impact on someone’s life.

Thanks to the Montgomery Track Club we have laid out a great course that will be challenging and fun. The run will be clocked and scored; also we are in the early stages of getting the course certified.

The festivities will take place on Saturday, November 11th at ERA Weeks & Browning Realty, Inc. located in East Chase behind Gold’s Gym. You have two options for registration; you can pre-register on Friday, November 10th at ERA Weeks & Browning from 5pm to 7:30pm or you can wait till race day.

Race day registration will begin at 6:30am and go until 7:45am. If you pre-register it is only a $22 fee, if you wait till race day it will be $25. To give you an idea of the impact you will be making it takes $25 to pay for one flu shot for someone suffering from muscular dystrophy.

Y102 will be on hand doing a remote broadcast from the event and will be providing pizza and Pepsi after the run. Everyone who signs up will receive a T-shirt and the winners of each age category will receive a sweatshirt.

There will also be a brief kid’s fun run after the 5K.

We look forward to seeing you there so we can “HOME IN ON A CURE”.

If you have any questions please contact J.C. Schulte the run coordinator at (334) 220-6675 or you can e-mail him at jc.schulte@era.com.

The MTRC has been asked to participate with course measurement, timing and tabulation.

The course is rolling , to flat, meandering into the Halcyon neighborhood, turns near Metro-Fitness and back to EastChase Chantilly, finishing at ERA. To volunteer or more info Contact : West Marcus 263-2424 Grahare@peoplepc.com

Hiking, Sheehan, and EastChase Chili's

No run again this weekend. I'll be hiking up North of here, in the Appalachia foothills. Temps are comfortable enough for hiking, another distraction of mine.

I'm also adding a link for George Sheehan M.D., running philosopher.

WARNING: The new Chili's at EastChase is dreadful. Food is the same boring, bland trash that all the others chains serve; cheap american food and fries, over-sized portions, greasy, salty, and not much creativity on the menu. The service is poor. Waited 45 minutes for 5 lunches and they got 3 out of 5 orders wrong.

Cooler Mornings

The morning temps have finally cooled off and it feels good to run in the mornings, before sunrise, again. I went out for a six-mile run this morning around Halcyon and Sturbridge, cool temperature, nice breeze, almost perfect. Can't wait until the temps drop below 50 in the morning. AAAHHHHH, so nice.

They conveniently put a new coffee shop in in front of the Publix on Vaughn and Taylor. So its Starbucks, but its in a great location to end my run where I can get some coffee. Coming soon, Village Coffee (locally owned) to the same location, just around the corner.

No run this weekend, just jogging around the nieghborhood.

Midnight Express - Summer Misery

No runs this next weekend for me, work commitments. But if I could run, I would be doing the Country's Midnight Express in Columbus, GA. The run starts just before midnight Saturday, Aug 26. The route is lit by candles. Proceeds benefit the local visually impaired through scholarship funds at Columbus State University. Here's the link for the run:

http://www.countrysbarbecue.com/express.cfm

The oppressive, miserable heat continues here without a break. It has been above 90 everyday since the beginning of May. It makes running a chore. The only choice I have is too run in the heat, or the boredom of a treadmill. I've been doing the treadmill lately, if this was my only option, I'd quit running. I'm really looking forward to the cooler temperatures, but the way this year is going, it's won't cool down till October. DAMN! The HOT summer nights don't really bother me, I can run forever as long as I can get some water, but it's the sun that really bothers me. As soon as that sun hits me, I feel drained, like "hitting the wall". Does the sun raise body temperature that much.

Saturday's 10K felt great until the halfway mark, I was a full minute faster than usually at the 5K, but then we turned around and were facing the sun the rest of the way. It was like someone was holding me from behind. There was even a nice breeze, but the sun just sapped my strength. I must be allergic to the sun. This year the sun and temps have been brutal everyday, no cloudy days this summer. The lack of tropical storms is very noticeable. Come on fall. I don't think I can take another summer in Hell (Montgomery).

Went to the country.......

Ate a lot of peaches. :D

I have that silly song stuck in my head because that's really what I did! The annual Peach Run 10K in Clanton Alabama, home of the Giant Peach along I-65.

It turned out to be a great "cool" summer morning, cloudy and breezy, and the temp was only 74 at 7 AM. All Alabama runners know that those a excellent running conditions for Alabama in the Summer.

Thank you to the Cornerstone Fitness & Wellness in Clanton. You know your in the country when the town's fitness center's "locker room" has no lockers, just "cubbies" for you to store your stuff while you workout. And only a single shower stall. I don't mean to insult Clanton, it is a very nice, quaint farming community. Next week is the Peach Festival.

"Going to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches..........." That song was stuck in my head the whole run!

Sommer's Place: One of my Favorites

Not only one of my best place to eat in Montgomery, it is within walking distance of my hovel.
Sommer's Place
From the Montgomery Advertiser: Two For Twenty: Sommer's Place.

Although it is an ugly suburban strip mall, I still manage to rate this place above any of the popular restaurant chains. The food is always good, the staff are always very friendly.

Rating: 4.8 out of 5 (Need more premium beer choices)

Running in this Heat

Avoid Hyponatremia!

Hyponatremia is literally water poisoning. Most runners are not aware that they can drink too much water. Not only can you drink too much water, but it can also cause a very serious condition and has even caused some fatalities.

A low level of sodium in the blood causes Hyponatremia. When you sweat you lose approximately 2.25 to 3.4 grams of sodium per liter of sweat. During a race, you will average around 1 liter of sweat loss per hour. If you drink only water during your race, you will dilute your blood even more, which can result in hyponatremia. This condition is usually only a problem in activities lasting more than one hour, but can occur in shorter activities.

Hyponatremia can be a serious condition. If you believe you may be suffering from this illness, seek medical attention. Drinking sports drinks and eating salty foods can treat minor symptoms.

Aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory drugs can contribute to the development of hyponatremia. Because of the popularity of these medications among runners, this condition is becoming more prevalent, especially in the longer distances such as marathons, ultra-marathons and triathlons.

To avoid hyponatremia follow these suggestions.

· Drink sports drinks during events lasting longer than 1 hour.

· Avoid anti-inflammatory medications.

· Take in at least 1 gram of sodium per hour.

· Drink at least 6 to 12 ounces of sports drinks every 15 minutes.

· Increase you salt intake before your race.

Two Excellent Restaurants

Located next door to each other in Cloverdale, across from the Capri Theatre, these two are actually single entities that compliment each other. Both Menu's are available at either place. Forget about the chain restaurant blandness, these two restaurants are unique and very appetizing.

Cafe Louisa - Cafe and Bakery - The best place for coffee and pastries in Montgomery or surrounding area. European flavors, New England ambiance, southern charm. The crew is unpretentious and friendly. The place is cozy and comfortable. The lunch menu offers something for everyone no matter what taste, from meat lover's to vegans, from traditional to organic.

Tomatinos - Pizza and Bake Shop - The only place to get real, original style pizzas, New York Style.

I rate these two together, 5 out of 5.

There is a burrito place that is also a part of this family of restaurants. El Rey or Burrito Lounge. When I have a chance to sample this place, I will update.

This small section of Montgomery set in Cloverdale offers more offers more quality restaurants than rest of the city, and all of them being with in steps of the Capri Theatre. The only place that shows independent movies in Montgomery. So when you're tired of fighting the crowds, traffic and parking lot nightmares near the Rave, come to Cloverdale and be relaxed and enjoy yourself with something off the beaten path.

Village Coffee

Perfect for the pre-run caffiene fix. There is a new coffee shop in town which is an Alabama owned business. Village coffee started out in Troy and has just added a new shop here in Montgomery. The coffee shop is located in front of the Publix on the Atlanta Highway and Taylor Road. Coffee is better than at the popular Seattle's chain of coffee shops; it is less crowded and much, much more tidy. A dark chocolate covered espresso bean has served with each cup I've ordered. The staff is very friendly and the setting is casual and inviting. There is even a guitar in the seating area just waiting for you to play.
http://www.villagecoffee.biz/
(Click on the Menu to find a $1.00 coupon)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 -.5 for One Minor Dissappointment. Like most coffee shops in this area, the outside seating area faces a parking lot and a busy street, BLECCHHHHHH! Who wants to sit outside with the carbon monoxide fumes and watch passing cars? It would be nice if a coffee shop would open here that has outside dining area that faces a more natural or pleasing setting. The best one of seen in Alabama is the Highland Coffee Company in Birmingham. Anyone know of others around Montgomery?

Time to load up the carbs

Recipe: CARAMELIZED CHOCOLATE, BANANA, AND MARSHMALLOW SANDWICHES

It has bananas, it must be healthy. Right?

Constantly Sweating

Just in time for Jubilee, it's officially summer. High's near 90, lows near 70's. July Temperature already in May. Time to become a O-dark thirty early morning runner. It's already in the 80's by 8:00 AM, misery!

The southern natives are still wearing sweaters in morning, I can barely breathe the heavy, sticky sweltering air. Time for summer hibernation.

High today of 92. Ouch!

Worthwhile Sunday activity

Being one of those few people in Montgomery who hasn't been infected with the religion meme, I have been looking for ways to improve my social life. There are not enough runs scheduled in Montgomery to keep my calendar full and smoky bars or churches are filled with unpleasant people.

There is an activity for our Sunday afternoons, and it caters to those with a running problem:

Montgomery Hash Hound Harriers meet every Sunday at 5 PM for their "Hash".

To qoute from their site:
They may be College professors or students, colonels or privates, managers or assembly line workers, doctors or plumbers... all are gathered together without concern for social status or education. They are gathered for the sport and the camaraderie and take on a new personality, for at our events we are all just Hashers ... For a Hash is NOT a competition (except to catch the Hares), but a friendly get together for people to have fun.

To find out more and for a schedule of hashes: Montgomery Hash Hound Harriers

I actually haven't tried this yet, but this group is centered around my two favorite activities, I will be trying this soon. Did someone say "Beer"

Village Coffee now in Montgomery

There is a new coffee shop in town which is an Alabama owned business. Village coffee started out in Troy and has just added a new shop here in Montgomery. The coffee shop is located in front of the Publix on the Atlanta Highway and Taylor Road. Coffee is better than at the popular Seattle's chain of coffee shops; it is less crowded and much, much more tidy. The staff is very friendly and the setting is casual and inviting. There is even a guitar in the seating area just waiting for you to play.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

-.5 for One Minor Dissappointment.
